about

"Making modern roots music can be a tricky business. Stick too close to the the script and you’re just a remake of the real thing. Stray too far and you risk losing everything that makes that music work. Paper Moon Shiners’ latest record walks the line between authenticity and originality with wit and aplomb. Listening through "Illusions of Composure" for the first time, I had to keep checking the credits, only to discover that yet another song on the album was not some obscure Depression-era gem but another of the band’s own compositions. Frank Meyer and Elena Antinelli write with a clean, narrative simplicity that lends itself effectively to their spare but imaginative arrangements. As singers, Meyer and Antinelli are each possessed of an instrument that is at once flexible, distinctive and somewhat unexpected; together, they conjure up more atmosphere than any half-dozen millenials in flawless newsboy caps. Meyer’s deft, uncluttered handling of acoustic and slide guitar, ukelele and banjolele provides more than enough groove and texture even when it’s just him and Antinelli, making the occasionally rowdy but always compelling guest performances that round out the album all the more satisfying."
